TIPS ON AUTO CARE
If you consider that approximately 1 in 5 vehicle breakdowns can be attributed to
improper maintenance and care, a little more attention to the condition of your vehicle can greatly
increase its reliability. The best place to start is the owner's manual.
The owner's manual commonly lists all items that require care as well as a
time-table for periodic maintenance. Be especially aware of items like proper tire inflation pressure,
fluid specifications and replacement schedule, belt replacements, etc. Following these and other
steps will prolong the life of your vehicle.
A few points you should consider when servicing your car are:
- Change the oil and filter regularly, usually every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.
- Lubricate the vehicle chassis and suspension as this will reduce wear and extend the mileage.
- Be sure to maintain tires at their proper inflation. The wrong tire pressure may result in uneven
wear, lower fuel efficiency and may result in overheating or other hazards.
- Check fluid levels frequently. Inadequate oil pressure can permanently damage the engine. Low
radiator levels may result in overheating. All fluids should be checked including windshield washer,
antifreeze, transmission, transaxle, brake and power steering.
- Belts need to be inspected regularly. Breaking belts can cause severe engine damage.
- Tune ups can catch problems like fouled spark plugs or dirty fuel injectors.
- Replace windshield wipers when streaks appear.
- Replace air and fuel filters as recommended by the manufacturer. Clogged filters can reduce fuel
efficiency as well as damage the fuel pump in the case of a fuel filter.
These tips may well extended the life of your vehicle as well as provide you with
peace of mind.
